About Counselling & Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a general term for referring to therapeutic interaction or treatment contracted between a trained professional and a client, patient, family, couple or group.

The problems addressed are psychological in nature and can vary in terms of their causes, influences, triggers and potential resolutions.

Its purpose is the exploration of thoughts, feelings and behaviour for the purpose of problem solving or achieving higher levels of functioning. Psychotherapy aims to increase an individual's sense of his/her own well-being.Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behaviour change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient,or to improve group relationships, such as in a family or individual and social relationships.

The terms Counselling and Psychotherapy are used interchangeably and even within the profession there is some discord as to whether they are different practices. It is generally accepted that Counselling is shorter term work, focused on difficulties in the here and now and that Psychotherapy is longer term work, at a deeper or unconscious level.

Counselling or Psychotherapy is offered as an equal partnership between client and therapist, with the emphasis on you always being in control of what is discussed and the way in which sessions develop. You may experience a whole range of emotions during therapy – depression, sadness, tears, distress, fear, anger or even happiness and satisfaction. Whatever you are feeling, I will be there to support you and help you to cope in the way that suits you best.
